First leg- Cape Town to Amsterdam, complete!

Not a bad flight, got on the plane and ate some YUMMY (joking!) airplane food. Watched Silver linings playbook, such a good movie 😍! Then listened to some music and slept for a little bit, maybe 4-5 hours. Woke up and listened to more music and slept some more, haha. Got served breakfast and watched Twilight the most recent one that came out. Good movie too. About to get off the plan and go find a locker to stow my carry on bag so I don't have to lug it around the city for 6 hours! Off to explore Amsterdam!!!

It's freaking freezing!!!! Ah I couldn't feel my face whole walking around. Thank god I had an extra jacket! Amsterdam has the most beautiful buildings!!! Walked around in the red light district , saw some fancy sex shops and place that sold cannabis seeds! Then wander a little more into a part of town that was predominately Asia...jumped on a hour canal cruise and now headed back to the airport to get ready for my second and last leg!!!!

Amsterdam to HOME

Ahh! It's so close I can taste the sweet Georgia air on my tongue!!! About to board my last plane from Amsterdam to Atlanta. It's a 9 hour flight and I'm hoping it goes by smoothly and fast!

Well smooth it did but not very fast, I have watched all the movies I wanted to see, Life of Pi and Cinderella. Life of Pi is an amazing movie!!! Also at balled my eyes out watching it as of course Cinderella is a classic and will never get old!

Can't wait to run to my mommy and daddy!!!! And the. I get to see Sebastian and rajah!!!! Omg I'm so excited!!!!

The journey is rearing an end.

Well after 2 in a half months of living it up reality is slowly making its way back in the door, but not before I explore Amsterdam for 6 hours on my layover! Can't believe that it's time to go home, it feels like I have been here for so much longer and it's been a blast but I'm so ready for life back home!!!!

About to get up and go see my granny, cross my fingers she's easy going today.
Visit was good she behaved and I said my good byes. So sad to say bye to here since it is probably the last time ill see her. That has not really hit me yet, been on the go all day . After gran Lauren, Brett and I went to get biltong from the waterfront and the got lunch. Can home and had to do some rearranging on my cases, pray to god that I'm not over-weight! Definitely brought way too much stuff!!!! Melissa cd over to chill and then off to the airport we go! So nervous, I hope everything goes well checking in. I prepaid for my extra luggage but it didn't show up on my check in so that should be an obstacle. I haven't receipt from though so wish luck!
Still have to claim my taxes, and exchange some rands to dollars. Flight only leaves at 11:30PM.

Excited about Amsterdam!!! Goin to take the train to Central Station and walk around, go see the red light district and maybe catch a canal cruise!

Check in was a breeze, but unfortunately I did not know that you had to present all you purchases in order to get back your taxes, so I only got R140 back which is about $14 so not bad! Makes me angry because I definitely bought well over 3000 worth of stuff and could have gotten about $100!!! Oh well you live and you learn. I have learnt 3 things about traveling: 1. You don't need 25 pairs of panties. all your bathing suits and a bra in every color!!! 2. You don't need a whole wardrobe just have versatile outfits, there are laundry machines for a reason. And lastly but not least 3. Claim your taxes before you check your baggage through.

Standing in line waiting to board my plane and can't help but reflect of the amazing journey I have just embarked on and all the amazing and inspiring people I have met. I'm truly blessed to live the life I do.

Standing in line waiting to board my plane and can't help but reflect of the amazing journey I have just embarked on and all the amazing and inspiring people I have met. I'm truly blessed to live the life I do.
I can't believe this part is over but I know that this is just the start of a new 1000 page book in my life. I have learnt so much about my self, everything about what type of guys I like to what I want to do in my career. The people I have met will never know how much they have influenced me and I am so excited to start looking for a job I will never hate! First stop the aquarium!!!

Here we go first leg to 'Mercia. Only 11 hours. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ✌

Bye gaansbaai see you next year!

Well here it's goes, leaving gaansbaai for the second time, but this time for real. Headed back to Cape Town and then one more day til I go home!!! Went on the boat, didn't dive or really do anything. Sharks where out but nothing worth getting on 17.3 degree Celsius water. Got some great pics though!!

Took Melissa and the Lewis' out to dinner for a thank you. We went to a little Greek place down the street called Spiro. Yummy but way too much oil! Then Melissa and I went to cafe caprice to meet friends for drinks. Just chilled and then went home with Lauren and Brett so we can go see granny tomorrow. It's going to be so sad because in theory this will be that last time I see here, unless she is alive when I come back but I doubt it :(. Hopefully it will be a good visit so I can remember here well.

Happy birthday Klara/last night in gaansbaai ( for real this time)

Today is Klara's birthday!! She is our "mom" aka the volunteer coordinator. Awesome girl, and is so much fun! Love her to pieces! Made her brownies and we all signed a card. Going to dinner and to tap house for her birthday!!!

Great day in the water. 2 trips but I only went on the second. During first trip Richard, rihane, Gary, Klara and I did some identification of species at the tidal pools. Found lots of hermit carbs, regular crab, fish and a star fish. Went to wimpy for lunch and then went on the boat. Good day but bad visibility. Saw the big female again. rihane and I dove but it was hard to see, so hopefully tomorrow is better visibility!

Going to eat at lighthouse tavern! Going home tomorrow after the trip!!! Yay, and then home home in 3 days!!!!!!

Got forced to do a Picasso again...not a happy camper!!! Yuck, first time was definitely easier.

Love the volunteers here! So sad to be leaving!!!!

4 days till home!!!

One trip today, and I'm hoping the water is warmer!!! It's klara's birthday tomorrow so we are making here a cake! Love her so much, I will definitely miss my volunteer mom!

Got to go out to shark alley today!!! Wahoo! So happy but the activity out there wasn't the greatest. We are just entering predation season so soon we should start seeing some seal chases and breaches! I will miss is though :(. Saw some seal and shark interaction today but nothing major. Hopefully we will head out to shark alley again tomorrow.

Got 3 more volunteers today, but jean and Melissa left. They were pretty cool, cousins from San Francisco and quit their engineering jobs to travel the world. Awesome girls! Volunteers that came to day seem cool a polish girl, German guy and a USA girl. Having a taco night tonight so we will get to know them more.

Nicola is going on a trip and won't be back til after I leave, I was really mean to him yesterday...feel bad about it. I won't see his before I leave so that was out final good bye...maybe I should message him. Oh we'll.

Taco night was a great success, so yummy and then we watched finding nemo!!! Nice relaxing evening. We have 2 trips tomorrow and I'm on both. Hoping to dive!!!

Gaansbaai day 3 round 2

Not a very exciting day at see. Only a few sharks came to play. Didn't dive today because the water is still cold 13.5 degrees Celsius...no thank you. Played rugby after. My team won, yay. Going to salon tonight but really just want to come home. Everyone is in PCB including my mom and I'm tired of not being with my friends. If I had to come home tomorrow is be totally ok with it. Unfortunately I have 5 days....

Went to out to play pool and karaoke. This time I did not do it by myself, all the girls did it and it was a lot better!!

Back in Sharky land day 2

Oh boy was it  rough this morning getting up, definitely did a lot of singing last night because my voice was on it's way out! I recovered well though, no worries. Good day out at sea and then went to look for shark eggs on the beach. Very interesting! Came across a seal that had gotten chomped in half by a white shark! Poor seal, but i guess the shark was happy. Found some eggs and other cool critters. Then headed back to the house to chill. Rihane and I went for a walk, she is from Sydney and is a registered nurse, but resigned to travel a bit. Same age as me, and like Nicola too. The funny thing is we are roomies...great. Its weird being back and not being the only girl. He used to lay all his attention to me but now not so much! It's making me soo mad, and he keeps asking me why I'm mean haha, maybe that's because I'm not going to chase you silly boy. If you want to flirt with me then I'm open, not going to stand there like a puppy dog and wait for you. Men, I tell ya! It's Spring Break for Valdosta, so jealous. Last year spring was so fun. Also makes me sad because last year I was with Ryan and now I see on facebook that him a Tiffany are going to Destin with the same kinda group that we were with last year...Weird.

Better news!!! My cousin Megan in Australia is ENGAGED!!! Finally, after dating her fiance (Ryan) for such a long time! So happy and excited! Looks like I'll be going to Australia around November or February! Ya!!!!!

Not going anything cool tonight. Nicola is over watching rugby, and I was siting in there watching with him and everyone else and then I had to get up because I kept hearing him tell Rihane all the flirty stuff he played on me! Such a player and he has a girlfriend!!! My lord, shame....

One trip tomorrow and then we get to do something fun and hopefully it's free! Then Saloon for the evening! No Karaoke this time though!!!

Hello sharky!!!

Heading back to gaansbaai today. Got picked up bright an early...4:50AM. Yikes, but I'm so excited to be going back!!!

Great to see everyone! There are some new volunteers, too. Everyone one is nice. There is a girl from Sydney, to American girls from California, A girl from Switzerland,a guy from Holland and lastly one from the UK. Good group. Weather in Gaansbaai was not good but we still went out, cloudy and cols, but the 5 meter female was out to play!!! HUGE FISH!!!! Came back and then took a nap. Valerie's last night tonight so we went to Captains, my favorite place. It was like tomorrowland on the dance floor, danced so much my neck hurts! SO SO SO much fun.

Good bye aquarium!

Ah today is so bitter sweet! So blessed to come across the opportunity of working at the aquarium! Had a blast with all the animals and people! I have really come connected with the penguins and will miss them so so so much!

Started the day off with diving! Had to be there at 7AM so I took the green arrow bus, only 3 white people on board! Had a great I love you and miss you session with my little bro. He is so sweet! I can't wait to see him! Unfortunately I missed the green point stop and had to get off in town and get back on. Apparently you are supposed to buy another ticket but they guy let me slide. Got to the aquarium and Kevin took me down in the predator tank. It was superb! The sharks and all the fish were so relaxing and calm. It was epic! A shark swam over my head just inches away!!! So glad I got to do it!!!

Im reading "crazy. Adventures of a marine biologist." The director of the aquarium wrote it a d it is an amazing book! Today I got to meet him and get is signed!!!! Can't wait until he writes the second book!!!
Played with the penguins all day and then said good byes. So sad to say good bye!!!

Taking the my citi bus to gardens to meet Lauren to go see my granny, and then a family dinner at Arnold's restaurant! Should be yummy read good reviews!

Got away with a short visit at gran. She usually makes us stay a couple hours. Only about 45 minutes today. Just chilling at Lauren a d Brett house till dinner.

Almost time to say bye to my penguins :(

Second to last day at the aquarium :(. Makes me so sad, I've really come accustomed to those little nuggets and I k ow we have some at the Georgia aquarium but they aren't going to be my Laduma or Ayoba...and what about big old Teddy. Luckily prudence said she will send me updates on the new chicks and I'm sure Hayley will as well! Tomorrow is my last day, and I'm finally diving in the predator tank! So nervous! I have to take the bus tomorrow morning which could be Interesting, and then walk from free point to the waterfront.
So in my book, I just finished the chapter where the waterfront aquarium was home to a sunfish or two, and today someone called and said there was an I hired sunfish on Cliffton 4th beach. Sun fish are huge flat fish! Go look them up! Not sure what the conclusion of the injured fish was but ill ask tomorrow. Would have been awesome if we got to hold it in our holding tank until it was better!!! Really wanted to see one!

Other than that, not much of an exciting day. Just hung out with the Rockies for a bit, played with the Africans. Bought a Children's book in Afrikaans, and Prudence was helpings translate it. She taught me the Afrikaans alphabet as well.

Left the aquarium at 2 and went to china town with Jeanette to get a suitcase, and hit the jackpot. Got a big, light-weight one that is baby blue and polka dotted for only...( drumroll, please) R110!!!! Ding ding and she struck gold! :)

Came home and packed everything except for some cloths to where when I get back from Gaansbaai and obviously all my clothes I'm taking with me there!!! Can't wait to see my friends, family and pets!!!!

Got to be up early tomorrow ( 5:30AM) yuck!! So it's bedtime! Goeie nag!!!!

Seal snorkeling!

Finally some adventure!!! Feeling 100% better today and ready to go snorkel with some seals. I originally was going to dive bit the seals are mostly on top of the water anyways, plus I'm diving Thursdays. So excited to play with the little nuggets!!!

Snorkeling was soo much fun! Not too cold, they swam right up to you, but if you moved too fast they darted away! Got some great pics and video's! Glad I decided to do it! Came home and hung out by the pool, worked out a little bit, and then watched Africa Cats from yesterday.

Packed my Gaansbaai bag and one of suitcases!!! Going to get a suitcase tomorrow hopefully if they aren't too expensive, and then pack that one! It's all happening so quickly! Yes!!!

Monday, March 11, 2013

its getting close to the home stretch.

Ugh, didn't sleep well last night :(. I ate so much and was so uncomfortable. I think I my windows were closed as well so no air circulation. Dreadful. Its supposed to be super hot today, so hopefully laying outside soaking up some Vitamin D will make me feel better. Woke up feeling really congested and my tummy hurts! Wah! Got some stuff I need to get done today including:
- Calling Marine Dynamics and confirming that I can come from the 15th-20th.
- Setting up my seal snorkeling trip.
- Calling Claire to inform her that I will be coming through to the aquarium Tom to dive early in the morning.
- Need to go buy a suitcase.
- Finish up some basic souvenir shopping for my franns!!

Lets hope Jeanette is accommodating to day...She has dentist appointment at 11 AM, so I have time to chill  poolside and relax and maybe see if she'll take me to access park to get a suitcase.

Ugh, I feel horrible :(. My head feels like a freaking bowling ball and my whole body aches, no good! Laying out in the sun probably wasn't the best, not at least I feel just about the same as I did before so not much damage done. Called Tracey at Marine Dynamics and she said that coming the 15th - 20th is perfect and the volunteers are actually in Cape Town today on a fun day, so they are coming to pick me up after they do Table Mountain. I have done that before so no need to do it again! Despite feeling bad I can't pass up the opportunity of a free ride! Tomorrow I am going snorkeling with the seals on Duiker Island, water is going to be so cold but I'm sure it will be worth it! Going to visit my Gran after the seals and getting some things done at the water front with Jeanette. Wednesday looks like I might be heading to the aquarium to play with the penguins and give Hayley my video I made, Thursday is when I am diving with the Ragged-tooth sharks. Thursday night the family is going to eat at a Sushi place for dinner, as a last get together before I leave, and then off to Gaansbaai! Yay! 5 days there, then home to have a night out with my friends and then off to USA!!!!

Volunteers never made it to Hout Bay, one got lost an they had to wait for the group to be united and by then it was too late. Didn't get to feeling any better despite the medicine I took. Started watching African cats but then all the Lewis' shows came on so I had to forfeit it, luckily they let me record it so ill finish later on. Hoping to feel better Tomorrow morning. Asked Derrick to drop me off at harbor tomorrow morning and of course his response was " we'll you know it's about a 15 minutes walk..." Fuck you bro, needless to say he giving me a ride. Gah I don't understand. They are so quick to tell me to walk everywhere and find rides but then turn to their friends and say jokingly that if I stay they will gladly adopt me...no thanks, I will pass!

Earlier today the fox and the hound came on, I was so excited for Disney movies! unfortunately it reminded me of home and my animals too much and made me start crying! So had to turn it off and go collect myself. *sigh* home in 10 days sound so heavenly!

Happy cycling

Today is the Argus, originally had planned to watch it is Hout Bay, but now I'm watching it in camps bay which is so much better on the beach. Haven't left the house yet, just chilling and watching some cricket. The cyclist will only be approaching camps bay around 12.

Ate some yummy healthy Kauai, a princess wrap. Perfect food for a princess like! Haha. Now just waiting on heather and Valcon to get to Camps Bay to go sit on the beach and watch the race a little bit more.

Not even going to ask Jeanette or Derrick for a ride to Hout bay just going to take the bus, so over their attitude. Decided that Friday the 15th I'm going to Gaansbaai and staying until the 20th.

Ended up meeting with Heather and Valcan to watch the cycle show, and then thankfully some of Jeanette's friends live close to Camps Bay so she arranged for them to bring me back to Hout Bay. Super sweet couple, I've met them before. The one guys brother lives in Durban and was telling me that he is quite connected with the Natal Shark Research Institute. I think I have read about it in my book, and to keep in contact with him so when I come back to South Africa next June he'll be able to try set something up for me to work with the scientists. Awesome connection!

Braai was delish, I swear I've gain 25 pounds...gross. So much food and eating out. Done eating, I gonna pull a Gandi move and not eat til I get back to the States. I don't care how sore my foot is tomorrow I am running, far and hard.

The one thing I am going to miss about Cape Town is it's vast opportunities for activity, hiking a mountain, cycle around town, going for a nice stroll down the beach, the beach itself with volleyball nets...the most you can do at home  is walk around a un-pretty neighborhood or park :(. It would be awesome if you could go to the gym and push a button and a projector would surround you with the place you chose to be....I could probably go for hours. "so where did you run today?...Oh just in Brazil...!" Virtual running/cycling. A great idea in my books!

Going to relax tomorrow and maybe go get my luggage sorted.
Tuesday: diving at aquarium with the sharks.
Wednesday: Visiting my gran.
Thursday: Snorkeling with the seals, and then a family dinner.
Friday: Hopefully be heading to Gaansbaai for 5 days!
Come back from Gaansbaai on the 20th on the morning, visiting gran again and having dinner with friends....and then...
21st: Flying HOME, only after having about half the day to make sure I have everything I need.

Aquarium day 2 of being back!

The forecast was right for once, rain on Friday and yup it's raining! Makes me want to stay in bed all day it's cold too! Good thing I'm going to the aquarium again, nothing to do when it rains!

Baby chicks are gaining weigh ver nicely! Sad I won't be there to see them mature in to blue chicks. :( maybe Hayley can send me updates!!!

Rained all day, couldn't even go outside to hang with the Rockies. I have never seen them move so fast when we went to fetch them and take them back upstairs to dry land!!! So spoiled, In the wild rain wouldn't even phase them!

Have arrangement to go diving Tuesday or Thursday next week, but I have to be at the aquarium but 7 AM!! Jeanette and Derrick definitely won't be taking me, if I asked them I'd probably get looked at like I was crazy and then hung for asking such a question...hopefully I can find away there. 13 days left in Cape Town and couldn't be more excited!!!!!

Going to my first trance party tomorrow with Travis, one of Amanda's friends.

On Sunday it's the Argus race, supposedly it's the biggest cycling ace in the world.

61

Spent a little time in the sun this morning. Very very hot today. I may or may not have gotten a little crispy...

Later around 4:30 headed toward table mountain to meet heather and valcon to hike a trail. Should be fun if I can walk tomorrow! Spending the night with them and then hopping on the city sightseeing bus. While I was waiting for Heather got to witness someone being air-lifted off the side of the mountain. Guess they hurt themselves or passed out. Got some video that ill post when I get back home. Pretty dangerous stuff dudes!

Hike was so relaxing, didn't hike up the mountain but along side it and down to deer park. Then walked all the way to kloof neck road and ate dinner at a little place called, peters house. Macaroni Mondays! R25 and R5 per topping! Yummy! Then walked to heather's flat and now just chilling and watching tv!

Apparently there is a birthday dinner for Jeanette tomorrow but I have not been told about it. Not sure if I'm invited or if its just for her friends. Kinda awkward when I have you be asked by a friend of hers if the dinner is a surprise or not...I have plans with my friends so I guess that will have to be put on stand by until I get the official invite. Really thinking about going back to gaansbaai earlier than planned, because I'm starting to feel very unwelcome at the Lewis household. Thanks god I come home in 17 days.

Love and light!!!

Off we go to the trance party, it starts at 10AM and goes to 10PM but we are leaving at 6ish, because Travis and his roommate are cycling in the argus tomorrow. I'm so excited, dressed as hippie as I could with a pair of jean shorts, tank and a scarf! Got the GoPro ready and "let's get loose!"

Love and light was AMAZING!!! So glad I decided to go even though no one I originally had planned with came! Meet some awesome people and got some great videos! Georgia definitely needs a trance scene! I'm starting one!!!

Asked Jeanette to come pick me up and was told I need to get a ride because they are too busy watching tv...I mean really? So over this, need to get out the house fast!!! So I'm staying at Travis' again and just chilling here watching the race from the beac, and then will possibly catch a bus to Hout Bay or see if Travis can drop me off on his way to Kirstenbosch. Can't believe my aunt and uncle...a tv show?!?? LAMF!!!

Back at the aquarium!

Back to the aquarium today, so up bright and early! Started looking at jobs at the aquarium in Atlanta last night ( shod also look at other aquariums as well, know that I think of it). The GA aquarium has some jobs available including a conservation biologist and a part-time maintenance diver. The biologist requires a maters but might as well apply and maybe they will pay for my masters! Also looked at schools in Georgia that had zoology/animal science/marine science programs. UGA and Savannah State have as well as GA Southern. Forgot to look at GA State. It makes me so anxious thinking about big girl jobs...

The penguin eggs hatched!! So we have babies!!! So excited got to hold them and weigh them. There were 6 eggs total: 2 were infertile because the parents moved them during the incubation period, and sadly one hatchling didn't make it. So 3 out 6 survived ( I'd say a pretty good rate at 50%) and are thriving! One chick is HUGE!

We took Laduma and Ayoba for a walk outside and through the aquarium, so sweet and super fast compared to the Rockies!!!

Doing an encounter with Hayley today, never done those so should be fun. And then should be diving in the predator tank! Cage diving with great whites and free diving with jagged-tooth sharks, now that's my kind of party!!! :)

It's an amazing day at the aquarium!!! This arranged marriage between Chuck and Labamba has been successful and Labamba has laid an egg! That's one more sweet penguin to enter the world in about 30ish days!!! It's predicted that the African penguin will be extinct in 20 years and that makes me soo sad! Got to penguin promises.com help save these adorable creatures!!!

Playing trivia tonight the the oldies crowd, and am absolutely fine with it, given up on Cape Town night life. Going to my first trance party on Saturday! Have no clue what to wear but hoping to find something at the water front today or tomorrow. 15 days til I fly home!!!! Getting anxious and excited to see my friends and family and my babies!!!!!!

Definitely did something to my foot, hurts when I walk. Hiked all that way the other day so I'm thinking I irritated some ligaments, hopefully it feels better by Saturday. Better not be anything crazy like a steer fracture!!!!

62.

Slept at Heather's flat last night and then woke up and walked from Kloof to Greenpoint. So much walking the past 2 days, I better get a lot of compliments on how good my calves/legs look when I get back! Walked through a little part of Cape Town called Bo-Kaap, it a muslim area, but the houses are all bright and colorful! Its crazy to see, because for a moment you forget you are in South Africa. We also walked through an area called the Waterkant, its the gay area right above Greenpoint. Not much to see except for nicle littel flats. Upon arrival at Greenpoint, I parted with Heather and Valcan and too a short cut to the Waterfront. They were continuing on to Cliffton ( walking, crazy people) to an India cooking class and I had plans to jump on the city sightseeing bus for a ride around Cape Town. Today is Jeanette's birthday ( and still no invite to the birthday dinner, so I am sticking to my plans. Especially because I asked Amanda if the dinner was for her friends only and she said "Yl.p." not sure that that means but I took it as "yip.") She is turning 60!

Got to the waterfront and confirmed my ticket for the blue mini peninsula tour, and then walked to the shopping center to get a gift for my auntie, a snack for the bus ride and some lunch. Ended up getting her a gift voucher fro Cape Town Fish Market, a place we ate sushi one day and she said it was her favorite place at the Waterfront. Just my luck they had buy one get one free sushi, so that was my lunch! Yummy! I have been eating so much sushi it's ridiculous! Not sure if its a good or bad thing to eat abundantly, but guess we will find out when I get home! Hoping are going to be "oh my Nikki you've lost weight!" That would be great because I definitely feel that total opposite! Any who, finished my shopping and headed to the bus stop to start my tour!

First stop the clocktower at the Waterfront, nothing cool to get off the bus and see just a drive by with a little bit of commentating.
2nd, after a little drive through the city to the convention center (also not a place to get off).
3rd was the center of cape town, here I got off and walked around. They have a big area where all the markets are, but it's very expensive compared to other markets, so no need to buy anything. The bus comes every 25 minutes, so just wandered until it came and then on to the next stop!
which was the Mount Nelson Hotel, its one of the most luxurious hotels in Cape Town. So I hopped off and walked around the hotel and then across the street down Government Lane. Didn't go inside the hotel, but the outside looked amazing!
Back on the bus and headed to Kirstenbosch, on the way there we passed University on Cape Town, gorgeous campus. I begged my parents to let me go there when applying to colleges, but obviously that didn't happen! They have a really good biology program so maybe I can do my masters there...you never know!  Also passed District 6, this was a place that whites and blacks lived in harmony and was were some of the best African jazz music was founded. Unfortunately in the 1970's the black were forced out the area, due to the Group Area act declared by the government stating that District 6 is to be a whites only area, because the living of blacks and whites together during the time of the apartheid caused conflict....RUDE! Today it stands empty and is a museum. I really want to go visit it. Finally at Kirstenbosch, and even though I was there on Sunday for the concert I never got to walk around the gardens, so I hopped off and took a walk around. It's one of South Africa's nine botanical gardens, and was created originally as a place for botanist to study plants in a natural environment. Stunning views of the gardens and mountain together and lots of stone sculptures. It would be a great place to come have a picnic, but not very nice to walk around by yourself. Nevertheless, glad I came and took a look.
Back on the bus and off to Constantia neck to get on the wine bus, Beau Constantia was closed so the next one on the list is Groot Constantia. It is one of South Africa's largest, most famous and oldest wine farms. By the way the cape is wine country, Horse creek ain't got nothing on this. Groot in Afrikaans means "big" and this is an understatement. Such a gorgeous wine farm, didn't get off to taste wine because they only do tasting one the hour every hour and I got there just passed 3:00. Plus I plan to come back and do the cellar tour/vineyard tour and tasting another time. Last but not least was eagles nest, nothing compared to Groot but got off and tasted some wines. Yummy whites, but I'll never be a fan of reds, no matter how many awards it has won! Group of girls from the States were sitting near me, so I had a good time listening to their conversations and what they had done in South Africa!
Back onto the Blue bus and head to world on birds, not to go in (because Jared and I spent a lot of time there the other day), but to walk home.
Great day of touring...

While I was in town I finally got the invite to dinner, guess they realized no one had told me. Decided not to go though, let them have a family night. I went to melissa's and ate dinner with her family and then we went to Ocean Blue in Camps bay to wait for Lauren and the others to rock up at Dizzy's. Flirted with our cute waiter, John Fish from fishhoek! He was a cutie, tried to convince him to come to Dizzy's but he never showed. Dizzy's was very busy and it took at least 20 minutes to get a drink, not fun! That always kills the mood, so after waiting for ever I didn't even want my drink. Finished it and left. South Africa is not living up to its party night life style.

Woke up at 3AM (probably because of all the red bull I drank, not a good idea) and went to the toilet, but almost fell over due to my calf muscles being so freaking tight!!! All that walking was catching up to me! They hurt so bad!  Hopefully they will feel better in the morning!

49, no sea day

Yay! Finally we had a day to just relax. We took the opportunity to get out of Kleinbaai and go wine tasting, beer tasting and cheese tasting, with a petting zoo thrown in for fun (mostly for me!).

Went to Raka winery, amazing wine and gorgeous surroundings. Tasted their 5 wines and then bought a bottle of sauvigon blanc. So cheap, ended up giving that to Jeanette and Derrick as a gift. I'll have to get another bottle just for me when I go back. After the winery we went to Birkenhead brewery to taste some beer. On the way their we stopped a a cute little store that had the BEST scones!                                                        ---->

Honey blonde was my favorite, kind of reminded me of Shocktop. I miss that! Can't wait to hit up a happy hour when I get home and just indulge in wings and Shocktop!!! Next stop was the cheese tasting, only tasted 5 cheeses, but they were good anyways. Nothing like Amanda's shop! Bought a bag of animal food and feed goats, a pony, some sheep and tried to feed the chickens, but they weren't interested. Stopped in a little town on the way back to look at a second hand store, old china and stuff, very interesting but nothing caught my eye, so I left empty-handed (thank the lord.) All in all it was a fun day!

some how missed 44 and 45

Those days were spent in Gaansbaai. Don't think anything big happened, just the normal waking up checking clients in, getting boat ready, going out to sea, plating with sharks, and cleaning boat when we got back, and then I would take a guess and say we went out to play some pool...ha I'm making a video titled " A day in the Life of a Marine Dynamics Volunteer" so you will get to see everything soon, just not the going out a playing pool stuff, that would be weird to do. I'm weird but not that weird :P.

Doing some volunteer work this morning. It is a shave-a-thon hosted by a group called Cansa ( cancer association of South Africa). It's taking place at the waterfront and people pay R50 to shave or spray their hair. All proceeds go to cancer society. Kind of like our relay for life. It was so hot but a lot of fun. Very heart warming knowing that I'm helping raise money for something that hits close to home. Since both my grandpa's died of cancer, and my uncle Anthony. We raised R29,205, so about $3,000 in only 6 hours! After we went home to cash up the total and then dropped it off at the office and then it was a hunt for a bottle store, but none we open since it was "late" ( 6 pm) ha! So we just went back Melissa's drank what she had there and then went to fire and ice for milkshakes. Jared and I got the "grown up" milkshake. Mine had banana liquor, vanilla ice cream and peanut butter. Jared's had amarula and not sure what else. Came home after a little drive around the city and then just chilled and chatted with Melissa's brothers and sisters. Going to my first trance party next weekend!!! So excited, tomorrow we are going to the beach and then to Kirstenbosch gardens for a picnic and concert!

I was one the people chosen for the exclusive trip this morning, it was a group of about 20 Russians. No English what so ever!!! Had one lady get extremely sea sick, felt so bad for her. Not many sharks out today but a few people on the boat were feeling bad so I don't think they were even bothered by it. Originally had planned to not go on the second trip but, had to go now because Tom was "not feeling well". Oh we'll whatever here for a reason so why not. There is a battle between Pieter and Nicola over me, ha who shall I chose is the question! It's all fun and games but nice to be fought over!
No plans for tonight, thank goodness! Just movies a pizza night and chilling. On Sunday when Manuela and Vida leave I move into the White House with Jason, kit and Tom.

Such a long day! In definite need of some relaxation time.

Watched Shark night, and what to expect when you are expecting. Shark night is so stupid its funny and what to expect is sooo funny! Had some yummy pizza from down the street and then came home and went to bed. Busy day, that was.

First full week on being 25! Not to bad of a week! Had some amazing times, meet a good bunch of people and having a bliz-ast! Very hot today, hardly any wind. Decided to mix it up and lay on the float instead of my chair. Definitely intensified the sun! LOVE IT! Holy tans lines haha, now I know why people like to tan topless here! Not gonna happen though...EVER! Packed my stuff for Gaansbaai. My aunt thinks I'm taking too much stuff and I probably am but I'd rather have more than needed than be grumpy that I can't find anything to wear. Monday I get picked up in the morning and head to Gaansbaai, which is about 2 hours away. get there and hope straight on the boat to go cage diving with GREAT WHITE SHARKS!!! After that we have a quick orientation and go shopping for food. I'll be staying in a house with 3-4 bedrooms and 2 people in each room. I hope some cool people are there! Super excited!!! Glad to also get away from here. :)

For example: Uncle Derrick comes running into the computer room! "The north west is getting 3 feet of snow...!" and I'm thinking ok....1. North west, that's on the other side of the states compared to GA...and 2. 3 feet that's normal! Ha. Poor thing thinks he knows so much but...that's a negative!

Talked to my dad's friend Stiaan, who was setting up the gamer park visit for me and I should be heading out that way March 4th! Not in the clear yet though, nothing is confirmed. I hope it all works out!!

Jared came over around 9 AM and we chilled for a little then walked to world of birds, saw some great animals. My favorite were these little monkeys. First they were trying to pull on Jared bandage on his hand, then they stole a ladies lip gloss out her purse, and lastly one jumped on me and tried to take my pearl earring out!! So funny! They also had alpacas, pygmy goats, lots of African grey parrots and other birds. Fun place and so big, might volunteer there if I get bored but I think the aquarium is better.

Came home and went back to Jared's house, watched Happy feet 2. Later Melissa picked us up and we when to Clairmount to eat sushi and see Argo. Didn't think I'd enjoy it by reading the summary, but turned out to be a GREAT movie! No wonder it won awards. Movies are so cheap here! Only R55 ( about $7)!

Nothing fun after dinner and movie, so just came home. Supposed to rain tomorrow, which I hope is wrong, so I can lay out :). Still no word from Stiaan about the Joburg/Game Lodge thing....getting very anxious about it, wish the plans would be settled so I can make further plans if it doesn't fall through.
monkey wanted my earring.

Pretty lazy day just laid out at the pool, and got a little burnt but glad to have some color back on my bones! I was getting a tad bit pale!!!

Went to shul with Melissa in Clairmont and then went to dinner at someone's house. Turns out its no just someone but my second cousins on my dads side! Such a small world! Go to eat lots of yummy food and see lots of family pictures, my favorite was one which had my gran and grandpa in it! I never got to meet my grandpa he died when my dad was 16. Definitely see where Allan gets his height from now!

Met some new people, and had some good laughs. Hopefully they will come out to joll (party) tomorrow.

I'm volunteering with the cancer shave-a-thon tomorrow. Melissa is in charge of it so I offered my services, I'm the cash handler! After that we might hit the beach or her pool, spending the weekend with her and then going to a concert on Sunday at Kirstenbosch gardens to see goldfish. They are a local electronic South Africa band. Should be good. Can't believe that my time in SA is rearing a end, only about three weeks left!

Just hung out with Jeanette today, went cavendish to get her watch and ring from the jewelry store, ate lunch and then looked for some Afrikaans books but didn't find any worth while buying. Did buy a pretty new ring.

Came home edited some videos of the aquarium. Heather and valcon came through Hout Bay and fetched me, I took them to the harbour and then we stopped at Chapman's peak hotel and ate in the restaurant. Very good calamari, my parents were right and would be jealous.
While driving around Valcon took a turn up the township road....I've never been so anxious and scared in my life. Imizamo yetu is not the place for whites, let alone Americans to be. We probably looked terrified in the car driving up the road to a turn around stop, but we got some pretty weird faces back at us ha. Needless to say we are still alive and with all our valuables! Never again though.

Got convinced to go to shul tomorrow, not to excited but what the hell, ill just be sitting at home anyway. Going to clairmont with Melissa's and then shabbot dinner at her friends house.

Hoping for some sun tomorrow!

So weird waking up and not cleaning a boat, checking clients in, flirting with Nicola, and playing with sharks!!!

Walked to world of bird and inquired about volunteering there, came home and set up camp by the pool.

Went to the biscuit mill to visits cousin and drop off suitcases. Ate a lovely meat and cheese platter. And then came home and started working on my volunteer videos.

Jeanette made a yummy chicken pie for dinner. Nice to have a nice good home cooked meal!

Now just chilling, watching tv and editing my videos.

Plans to walk to world of birds tomorrow again, but actually go in and explore. Jared might come if he can get a ride over here, since he can't drive still. Then might go back to his house and chill by the pool.

55, all good times must come to an end.

Leaving gaansbaai today, so upset :(. I was only here two weeks but it felt like so much more. Such amazing people and memories made, even though it wasn't exactly what I thought it was I still am excited to come back.

Had an amazing trip on the water saw great sharks, saw a flock of gamets and bottle nose dolphins!!! Plus a whale. The ocean is going to miss me and came to say good bye.

I am definitely coming back for Klara's birthday. Tracey said I can come back for a week for free if I'd like, so if the game farm doesn't go through then I definitely will! Looked up the game farm an is actually a hunting lodge, not sure if I mentioned this in my previous post, but I'm not very excited about it.

Heading home to Cape Town tonight, Melissa and everyone wants to go to spur and dubliner, probably best to so something since I'm already upset about leaving all the wonderful people I met in the last 2 weeks.

Semi- excited to just relax and lay out tomorrow!

Buy one get on free burgers at spur...hell yea, and so good. I have given up on dubliner. Every time I have gone its not very fun, ready for a new bar!

54, last night in Gaansbaai

Only had one trip today and it was a late trip at 11, so got to sleep in a bit.

Very small trip only 18 people so that meant i got to dive!! Visibility was awesome but I'm so smart and forgot my memory card for my gopro ( in my computer just like usual!) Still went in but just got all of Kits video's. He got some GREAT passes, I kept trying to touch the sharks but none would get close enough. Maybe tomorrow. I am going on the boat again but leaving afterwards. Kinda sad!!! So many fun experiences and new people I got to meet! I might come back after Johannesburg for Klara's birthday on March 19th, the only problem is my flight to Atlanta leaves March 21st so it might be a little bit of a struggle, plus I'll have to see everyone before I leave. My flight leaves very late at night so I can always have a dinner with everyone before I leave forthe airport. I'll have to figure it out!

Eating at the Great White House tonight and then going to a few bars, including Taphouse for  Picasso ( its a "drink" but not in a glass. It a paint pallet and every whole is filled with a different liquor. You have to do it fast and its very yummy. Every volunteer has to do it when they leave.) I'll take a pic so you can see what I am talking about. Then to Salon for Karaoke and then Captains for pool and dancing.

I'm learning Afrikaans and am very proud of myself!!! Jared said he will teach me more when I get back home.

Never made it to captains. Sang Taylor swift at saloon ( you are welcome Cassie) and hey Mickey song because there were three other Nikki's In the crowd. Played some pool got hit on by weird guys...no big deal... Gah!!!!!!

Home now and getting ready for bed, leaving tomorrow afternoon.
 Picasso at taphouse.
Karaoke at saloon - our song, taylor swift...embarrassing.

No volunteers were allowed to go on the exclusive trip this morning because it was the king and queen of Jordan!!! Would have been awesome to be in the presence of royalty! Instead we watched them board and then went off to the beach to collect kelp to make wreaths for the Birkenhead memorial on the 28th. I HATE KELP, it smells bad and has all this Nast bugs/fleas that hangout in it and then jump off. Luckily I had my boots!

No biologist will be back to check the next trip in ( the job Nicola usually does, but like stated before he's in cape town:/) so I have to do it! Kinda excited to make fun of him and say I took his job ha!

Full trip on the second so might no be able to dive again.

Oh yesterday a shark struck Sally the seal decoy out of no where and got a tooth stuck in it so kwezi gave it to me!!! So awesome and sharp, was messing around with it and cut my finger ha!

Check in went smoothly and ha a great trip, saw some big sharks. So tired but no time for a nap :(, managed to squeeze in a 20 min cat nap but that just made me feel worse.

Got the confirmation about going to the game reserve in Johannesburg. Can't decide if I'm happy about it or not. Jared isn't going to happy about this.
But then again he's been less talkative since the weekend.

Went to play pool at sea view, it was a busy night with tops 20 people ha! Love "local" watching! Late trip Tomorrow at 11 so we get to sleep in, wish I had my Korea. Cassie, Kenzie and Katelyn here with me. Miss them more than my family sadly. Only 1 more month until I get to see them!

Tonight I'm going home to YouTube africaans videos so I can be fluent I it by the time I get back!!!

Note to self: have not seen ONE cute guy In gaansbaai , except for Nicola but he doesn't count.

Totsiens! ( good bye in africaans) Ek is lief vir jou ( I love you).

Happy birthday toy baby brother today!!! Miss his crazy, annoying ass soo much! It was another thirst Thursday at the ΣΝ house and he word is he was raggin! Good for him!

We had 2 trips again today. I was in a weird mood and I think it had to do with 1.) not being able to party my bro on his day of birth 2.) not being able to party with my lovely friends at the frat castle and lastly 3.) Nicola was leaving for cape town today to go visit his girlfriend, his birthday is tomorrow. ( thumbs down) he'd have more fun with me! Ha.

Trips today were so chaotic. I hate it when they are like that because I feel useless and always in someone's way!

Going to play pool tonight, and then have one exclusive trip tomorrow and a regular one. Hopefully the exclusive one is someone famous!!! That would be awesome!

So I found this volunteer program in Belize, get to scuba dive and collect data. Definitely wanting to do it, it's only a 2 week program. Already planning my trip! Oct 24 trough Nov 6 I WILl be in Belize!!!

Got gone from captain after playing lots of pool and chilling and had a great conversation with Jason ( another volunteer) about relationships and pets. Lots of good stuff, he's a really good guy! But off to bed now, I've got to be fresh and ready Tomorrow in case it's a famous person on the boat!!!
